ABOUT COLAB

Sacred Journey (built at CoLab)

WE SUPPORT
ARTISTS,
BUILDERS,
AND MAKERS.

Since opening our doors in March of 2014, we have continued to grow and achieve our mission of building community and supporting local artists, builders and makers. We provide the space, tools, and education for locals to build art projects and organize meetings and events.

THE TEAM

VIC LIAO

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Victor holds 24 years experience in product and program management. Nine years ago, he was a 9-5 workman with few artistic outlets. Inspired by what he found at CoLab, Victor evolved from burgeoning artist to Managing Director. Victor takes it as his personal mission to help others experience similar growth and fulfillment through CoLab. He embraces the philosophy that anyone can bring out the artist buried within. Victor manages CoLab, oversees its programs, fundraises, and fosters CoLab's growth into the community.

Diane

DIANE

EDUCATION DIRECTOR & ELECTRONICS LEAD
Diane has worked on many big art projects, including leading a large scale Burning Man installation called Unfolding Humanity in 2018. Professionally, Diane is a Professor of Mathematics at USD, with research interests in low-dimensional topology.

She enjoys making costumes, wall art, laser cut earrings, and figuring out how things work and how to make them on her own.

SASHA

SEWING DEPARTMENT LEAD

Sasha loves the design and build process in all materials; if he is aware of a fabrication technique, he has probably tried it or wants to try it. Sasha is a professor at SDSU, specializing in the neuroscience of touch and human movement.

BRANDIE

ADMINISTRATIVE GURU

@DrClamJammer Hey there! Art is a noble and powerful form of human expression, and the 10 Principles resonate with me. While I’m not the one using the fancy equipment at CoLab (my style is more ArtsN’Crafts meets MacGyver meets Preschool), my knack for connecting People to Things—or Other People—has found a home. I’m your Admin Guru answering general question emails. Radical Inclusion is my favorite principle—so even if your inquiry doesn’t quite fit, the story may not end there. My light seeks other light :fly::spider_web:.

FOUNDED BY DREAMERS.

CoLab was founded in March of 2014 by San Diego Collaborative Arts Project (SDCAP), a non-profit offering opportunities for collaborative art and civic engagement projects. In addition to CoLab, SDCAP organizes a San Diego Regional Burning Man event called YOUtopia, and supports the Maker Faire, San Diego Burning Man Community Pride Parade float, Art Around Adams (Music & Art Walk), Figment San Diego (one day art festival) and more.
